How do you Stay Connected to God?

John 15:4
There are moments when small things reveal deeper truths. For me, it is often something as simple as a phone battery running low.

Honestly, I sometimes panic when my phone or laptop shows a low battery sign. Especially when I am working on something important. Or when I am in the middle of a meaningful conversation. I feel uneasy. Distracted. Rushed. I immediately start looking for a charger. In my mind, if my device shuts down, everything stops.

I remember one time while teaching in class. I was explaining my lesson, sharing my thoughts, feeling confident and prepared. Then suddenly, my laptop turned off. It died. I knew I should have plugged it in earlier. The charger was right there. But I forgot. I stood there for a moment, embarrassed, trying to recover while my students waited.

John 15:4

Another time, I was in an online prayer meeting with my dear sister Hyangsuk. She was sharing from her heart. It was a sacred moment. Then I noticed my battery was down to three percent. My heart sank. I had to interrupt her sharing just to excuse myself and find my charger. I felt so embarrassed. She was opening her heart, and I had to pause the moment because I was not prepared.

These moments stayed with me.

They reminded me of something deeper about my spiritual life.

How often do I do the same with God.

I move through my days confident, busy, serving, caring, teaching, encouraging others. I assume I have enough strength. Enough patience. Enough wisdom. Until I suddenly feel drained. Tired. Overwhelmed. Empty.

And then I realize I forgot to stay connected.

Jesus speaks directly to this in John 15:4.

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

This verse is gentle, but it is also very honest.

Jesus does not say try harder. He does not say do more. He says remain.

Remain means stay close. Stay connected. Stay aware.

Jesus uses the picture of a vineyard because it was familiar to the people. Vineyards are beautiful, but they are also fragile. A branch only lives because it is connected. Once cut off, it may still look alive for a while. But slowly, it dries up. It loses life.

The same is true for us.

We may still smile. Still serve. Still show up. But inside, we are running on empty if we are not connected to Him.

This reflection is especially close to my heart as a woman. A wife. A mother. A servant. A teacher. A sister in faith.

Women like us carry many roles. We give. We nurture. We lead quietly. We hold things together. And often, we forget that we are not the source.

God is.

Just like a phone cannot function without power, we cannot live fully without staying connected to Jesus.

Below are four reflections from John 15:4 that I am still learning, practicing, and praying through.

1. Connection Comes Before Fruit

We often focus on fruit. Results. Impact. Growth.

We ask ourselves
Am I doing enough
Am I being useful
Am I fruitful in my ministry
Am I helping others

But Jesus starts with connection.

A branch does not wake up and try to produce grapes. It simply stays connected. The fruit comes naturally.

Many women feel pressure to always be productive. Spiritually strong. Emotionally available. Always giving. But fruit does not come from effort alone. It comes from connection.

When we skip time with God, we may still function, but we slowly lose joy. Peace fades. Patience shortens. Love feels heavy.

Jesus reminds us that fruit is not forced. It is the result of staying close to Him.

Application
This week, choose connection over performance. Before serving others, sit with God. Even a few quiet minutes matter. Read a verse slowly. Talk to Him honestly. Let your heart breathe.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me remember that I do not need to strive to be fruitful. Teach me to stay close to You. Slow my heart. Quiet my mind. Let my life produce fruit because I am connected to You, not because I am trying to impress anyone. Amen.

2. Disconnection Does Not Always Feel Sudden

A phone does not shut down immediately. First, the battery drops. Ten percent. Five percent. One percent.

Spiritually, disconnection often looks the same.

It starts quietly. Less prayer. Shorter patience. More irritation. Less joy. We still believe. We still love God. But we are running low.

Many women do not notice until they feel exhausted, discouraged, or emotionally empty.

Jesus warns us with love. A branch cut off cannot sustain life. Not because God is cruel, but because connection is essential.

Application
Pay attention to your spiritual battery. Ask yourself gently
Have I been spending time with Jesus or just thinking about Him
Have I been listening to His Word or only listening to noise

Do not wait until you feel empty. Plug in early.

Prayer
Father God, help me notice when I am running low. Do not let me ignore the signs. Draw me back before I am drained. Thank You for always welcoming me back without shame. Amen.

3. Remaining Is an Act of Trust

Jesus says we remain in His love by obeying His commandments.

Obedience is not about fear. It is about trust.

Many women struggle here. We want control. We want to fix things. We want answers now. Obedience feels risky because it asks us to let go.

But obedience is staying connected even when we do not understand.

It is choosing forgiveness when it hurts. Choosing rest when there is more to do. Choosing faith when fear feels louder.

Remaining in Jesus means trusting that His way leads to life.

Application
Ask God where He is inviting you to trust Him more. It may be in rest. In surrender. In letting go of worry. Obedience can be quiet, but it keeps us connected.

Prayer
Jesus, help me trust You even when I do not see the full picture. Teach me to obey out of love, not fear. I want to remain in You, especially when life feels uncertain. Amen.

4. God Is Always Ready When We Plug Back In

One of the most comforting truths is this
God does not shame us for disconnecting.
He simply invites us back.

When my phone battery dies, I plug it in. The power flows immediately.

God is even more faithful.

No delay. No lecture. No rejection.

Jesus says remain in me, and I will remain in you. This is a promise.

Even if you feel distant today. Even if you have been running on empty. Even if you feel embarrassed like I did during that prayer meeting.

God is ready.

Application
Come back to Him honestly. No long speeches needed. Just come. Sit. Pray. Listen. Stay.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for being patient with me. Thank You for always being ready when I return. Help me remain in You daily, not only when I am desperate. You are my strength and my life. Amen.

A Gentle Invitation

To my sisters in faith
You do not have to carry everything alone. Stay connected.

To those who are searching or unsure
Jesus is not asking you to perform. He invites you to stay. To know Him. To receive life.

Remaining in Jesus is not about perfection. It is about relationship.

Just like a branch and a vine. Just like a charger and a phone.

We were never meant to live disconnected.

May this week be a reminder to plug in. To pause. To remain.

Blessed week.

Tess 💕🙏
