5 Steps to Effectively Share the Gospel

My husband is praying to win another soul for Christ in our neighborhood. We are grateful to be living in a "Borey" (community in Khmer) where there is a Park. We love walking and exercising at our park. Vandy would be exercising in the early morning there, he would wait for the sun (natural Vitamin D!). It so happened that some new faces would come and exercise as well. On some weekends, my husband has had the opportunity to walk and talk to an elder man while walking on the park. Vandy is an introverted person, it's a struggle for him to even start a conversation, but one thing I like about him is that he is a good listener. And because of that, the elder man is so happy to have conversations with him. He found out that he was a government retiree. They have lots of topics as they walk in the park from politics, family down to health. Vandy is very persistent in listening and is waiting for the opportunity for him to speak. My husband knew it would take a while for the man to listen to him. In Cambodia, it is important to build a good relationship as a foundation first before making a move to evangelize. And since he is older than him, he has to give way as a form of respect. It will sometimes take months of building familiarity and friendship. But my husband has already set a goal to pray, care, and share the gospel with this man.

In the case of my sister in law, it took at least 6 months for her to fully understand the meaning of sin and salvation before she decided to accept Christ as her Savior, you may read her story here 👉Kunthy's Spiritual birthday

I was able to snap a photo of them (Vandy on the left & the old man on the right)

The verse in Galatians 5:14 emphasizes the importance of love as the cornerstone of the Christian faith. It is not just a commandment but a reflection of the love of God Himself. It states, "For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'

The Significance of Loving Our Neighbors

Loving our neighbors is crucial for the advancement of the gospel for several reasons:

  • It Demonstrates the Love of Christ: When we love our neighbors, we are reflecting the love of Christ to the world. This can attract people to the gospel and encourage them to seek a relationship with God.
  • It Creates Opportunities for Witness: Loving our neighbors provides opportunities to share the gospel in a natural and authentic way. When people see our love and compassion, they are more likely to be open to hearing about Christ.
  • It Builds Relationships: Love is the foundation of strong relationships. By loving our neighbors, we can build relationships that can lead to deeper conversations about faith and salvation.
  • It Honors God: Loving our neighbors is a way to honor God and fulfill His commandment. It demonstrates our obedience to His word and our desire to live a life that reflects His love.

5 Steps to Share Jesus' Salvation Effectively

Here are five practical steps to share Jesus' salvation with our neighbors:

  1. Pray for Open Hearts: Before you begin, pray that God will open the hearts of your neighbors to receive His love and truth.

    • Prayer: "Lord, please soften the hearts of my neighbors. Grant them a desire to know You and experience Your love. May Your Holy Spirit guide my words and actions."
  2. Build Relationships: Spend time getting to know your neighbors on a personal level. Show genuine interest in their lives and listen to their stories.

    • Actions: Simply spend time talking with your neighbors. In the case of my husband, he is taking the advantage of early morning exercise anticipating for the elderly man to come and walk with him.
    • Prayer: "Lord, help me to connect with my neighbors in a meaningful way. Give me wisdom and compassion as I build relationships with them."
  3. Share Your Testimony: Share your personal story of how Christ has transformed your life. Be honest and vulnerable about your struggles and triumphs.

    • Actions: Share your testimony during a casual conversation, at a small group meeting, or through a written testimony.
    • Prayer: "Lord, give me courage to share my testimony with my neighbors. May my story glorify Your name and inspire others to seek You."
  4. Explain the Gospel Clearly: Use simple language to explain the gospel message of sin, salvation, and eternal life. Focus on the love of God and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

    • Actions: Use resources like the Roman Road or other gospel presentations. Be prepared to answer questions and address concerns. My sister in-law Kunthy had many questions, and it was definitely important to clearly explain to her God's word.
my sister in-law Kunthy keeps her bible (new testament) and her notes/journal at hand during bible study sessions

    • Prayer: "Lord, grant me wisdom and clarity as I explain the gospel to my neighbors. May Your Holy Spirit convict their hearts and draw them to You."
  5. Invite Them to Follow Christ: Encourage your neighbors to make a decision for Christ. Invite them to pray a prayer of salvation and to begin following Jesus.

    • Actions: Offer to pray with them, provide them with resources for further study, and connect them with other believers in your community.
    • Prayer: "Lord, help my neighbors to make a decision for Christ. May they experience the joy and peace that comes from knowing You."

To wrap up, let us remember, the goal is not to force people to believe but to introduce them to the love and grace of God first. By loving our neighbors (and family members) and sharing the gospel with compassion and clarity, you can play a vital role in bringing people to Christ.
