As I reflect on my journey of completing my MBA in Communications and Public Relations, this scripture resonates deeply. My experience, marked by purpose, challenges, perseverance, and ultimate victory, testifies to God’s grace and faithfulness.

A Clear Purpose

Pursuing an MBA was not merely a career decision for me; I press on it is also a calling. As a university lecturer, I sought to recalibrate my skills, expertise, and competence to better serve my students and peers. But more than that, I desired to honor God by modeling excellence in academics. The decision was rooted in a deep conviction that my life, including my professional journey, should reflect God’s glory. I wanted to demonstrate that faith and integrity can thrive even in competitive and challenging environments "marketplace".

In Matthew 5:14, the reference to a city on a hill is striking. In ancient times, a hill symbolized a connection between heaven and earth. Similarly, I believed that my academic journey could be a platform for God to reveal Himself through me. By striving for excellence and maintaining integrity, I hoped that those around me—classmates, colleagues, and students—would see God’s light shining through my life.

The Challenges Along the Way

The road to finishing my MBA was far from easy. It was a four-year journey, longer than the usual duration, because I could only take Saturday classes. It was a conscious effort that I was able to get a go signal from my husband to pursue this as long as I would prioritize corporate worship on Sundays. This decision stemmed from an unwavering commitment to honor the Sabbath and prioritize Sunday worship and ministry. While this deliberate choice aligned with my values, it came with its share of sacrifices. I often felt the weight of delays, knowing that my peers were finishing their programs ahead of me. Yet, in hindsight, this extended timeline became a sweet season of growth—a time for my faith and dependence on God to deepen.

There were also moments of temptation to compromise. The pressure to take shortcuts, neglect certain responsibilities, or follow the crowd was real. In an academic environment where cutting corners can sometimes seem like the easier path, I was often reminded of Romans 12:2: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." By His grace, I resisted the urge to conform and remained committed to upholding academic integrity. This commitment even inspired my research project, which focused on promoting academic integrity in Cambodian universities. The project became a reflection of my values and a testimony of God’s sustaining grace.

Navigating the Journey

Perseverance became my anthem during this journey. Balancing my roles as a lecturer, pastor's wife, mother, and student required stamina, discipline, and, above all, God’s strength. There were late nights spent writing papers, early mornings preparing lectures, and countless prayers asking for wisdom and clarity. The verse in James 1:5 became my anchor: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

Collaboration with my peers was another significant aspect of this journey. Group projects, discussions, and shared challenges taught me the value of learning from others. I was humbled by the diverse perspectives of my classmates, many of whom came from different backgrounds and experiences. This collaboration enriched my understanding and reminded me of the beauty of unity in diversity—a reflection of God’s creation.

The Sweet Victory

After four years of perseverance, I finally completed my MBA with flying colors—all by God’s grace. The joy of crossing the finish line was indescribable. It wasn’t just about the degree; it was about the journey of faith, growth, and unwavering commitment to God’s principles. The defense of my research paper was a particularly humbling experience. Standing before a panel of academics, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for God’s guidance throughout the process. Every challenge, every late night, and every prayer had culminated in this moment of victory.

Lessons from the Hill

Matthew 5:14 reminds us that our lives are like cities set on hills. Just as a city on a hill cannot be hidden, our lives are meant to be visible testimonies of God’s love and grace. My MBA journey was a hill where God revealed His presence in both struggles and victories. It was a place where His strength was made perfect in my weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

This journey also reinforced the importance of integrity. In a world that often celebrates shortcuts and compromises, choosing to uphold God’s standards can feel countercultural. Yet, as believers, we are called to be the light of the world, shining brightly in dark places. By maintaining integrity, we reflect God’s character and draw others to Him.

Encouragement for Others

To my fellow believers, especially those pursuing their own hills—whether academic, professional, or personal—be encouraged. The journey may be long and fraught with challenges, but God’s grace is sufficient. Commit your plans to Him, prioritize what truly matters, and trust His timing. Remember that the ultimate goal is not just the achievement itself but the opportunity to glorify God through the process.

For those facing moments of doubt or temptation to compromise, hold fast to your faith. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Lean into God’s strength and let His light shine through your life. Your journey, though difficult, can be a powerful testimony to those around you.

A Final Reflection

As I look back on my MBA journey, I am reminded of the simplicity and depth of Matthew 5:14. Our lives, like cities on hills, are meant to be visible markers of God’s goodness. Whether in struggles or victories, God’s light shines brightest when we depend on Him.

My prayer is that this journey—marked by purpose, perseverance, and grace—will inspire others to pursue their own callings with faith and integrity.

Let us continue to be the light of the world, reflecting God’s glory in every hill He places us on. May our lives point others to His salvation and reveal His presence in both the ordinary and extraordinary moments.

To God be the glory!
