Finding Peace in Life’s Storms
Kampot has always been one of our family's favorite places to visit. Just a few hours from Phnom Penh, it offers a peaceful escape from the busyness of the city. The stunning Durian hill landscapes, the cool breeze from the river, the stunning fireflies on a ferry ride, and the breathtaking sunset always make us pause and reflect on the beauty of God’s creation. There is something about nature that brings us closer to Him, reminding us to rest in His presence and trust in His unfailing love.
Our Kampot getaway won't be complete without visiting the Durian Farm and it's so happened the Kamchay Dam is located. The massive boulders surrounding the river and the force of the water released from the dam remind me of the verse in John 16:33:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NIV)
Just like the unpredictable flow of water near the dam, life is filled with sudden challenges and overwhelming trials. The current can be strong, and if we are not careful, we might be carried away by fear, doubt, or despair. But praise God! He is our Rock, our refuge in times of trouble. No matter how fierce the storm, He stands unshaken.
Here are five reflections on John 16:33, inspired by Kampot’s landscape and Cambodia’s way of life, to encourage us in our faith journey:
1. God is Our Rock Amid Life’s Storms
The boulders near the Kamchay Dam are massive and immovable, standing firm even as the powerful river rushes around them. They remind us of God’s unshakable presence in our lives. No matter how strong the currents of trials may be—whether it’s sickness, financial burdens, relationship conflicts, or grief—God remains our firm foundation.
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.” (Psalm 18:2, NIV)
Just as these rocks provide stability to the landscape, God provides security for our souls. When we cling to Him, we will not be swept away by life’s troubles.
2. Life’s Currents Can Be Strong, But God is StrongerWhen the dam releases water, the river’s current becomes dangerously powerful. It is easy to lose control and be carried away. In the same way, life’s problems can feel overwhelming. Sometimes, we feel powerless against circumstances beyond our control—job loss, unexpected expenses, or the loss of a loved one.
Yet, God reassures us that He is mightier than the strongest current. He walks with us through every hardship and gives us the strength to endure.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1, NIV)
Even when we feel like we are drowning in problems, God’s grace is enough to sustain us.
3. Trusting in God Brings Peace, Even in the Midst of Trials
Fishermen in Kampot know how to read the river’s movements. They adjust their boats accordingly, knowing that fighting against the current will only exhaust them. Likewise, when we try to control everything in our lives, we become weary. But when we surrender to God’s will, He gives us peace.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” (Isaiah 26:3, NIV)
Peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God in the midst of it. When we place our trust in Him, we experience a peace that goes beyond human understanding.
4. God’s Protection is Greater Than Our Fears
Many families in Cambodia worry about their children traveling to the city for school or work. There are real dangers, and the unknown can be frightening. Similarly, in our spiritual lives, fear can paralyze us. Fear of failure, fear of the future, or fear of losing control can keep us from stepping forward in faith.
But God is our protector. He guards us like a shepherd watches over his sheep. No trial, no danger, no challenge is greater than His power.
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, NIV)
5. Trials Prepare Us for Greater Things
Farmers in Cambodia understand that before a harvest comes, there must be a season of hard work—plowing, planting, and waiting. The same is true in our lives. God allows trials not to break us, but to prepare us for something greater. Every hardship refines our faith and strengthens our character.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” (James 1:2-3, NIV)
Difficult seasons may not make sense to us now, but we can trust that God is using them to shape us into who He wants us to be.
A Prayer for Strength and Peace
No matter what trials we face, we can hold on to the promise of John 16:33. The world may be full of challenges, but Jesus has already won the victory. Like the steady rocks in Kampot, God remains firm and unshaken. He will guide us, protect us, and lead us to peace. Take heart, for He is always with us!
