Do you have a missionary calling?

Phnom Penh City at night (view from the Ferry ride)
My missionary calling started some decades back in my country (the Philippines). I would be trekking and ministering around to the tribal community with my mission classmates at (ACM) Asian Center for Missions.  These mission travels have given me much clarity about God's calling for me to become a missionary. I vividly remembered; my last tribal mission was in Davao - the Matigsalug tribe. It was an extra wonderful experience that even sealed my faith journey. God has impressed me that His name will be exalted among the nations! (and I should look for ways to serve and be a part of it!). We trekked for the whole day to the mountains and streams to reach a local community. It was exhausting but truly worth it trek! I was glad I was able to write this post in 2007 👉 Missions to Matigsalug Tribe

Months after that tribal trip, I began my mission journey here in Cambodia. As a single missionary, I joyfully took the challenge praying my service could be of help in the mission field. My main destination is in Kratie province where I taught free English classes to our young people to the community of Rokkakandal. I actually have a weekly blog about my mission then, but it was posted in multiply.com site (which unfortunately was already gone).

By God's grace, I was given the opportunity to serve for two fruitful years in that beautiful province. My students were very accommodating to touring me around. From the paddy fields, cool lakes, lush forests, watching sunrises & sunsets, crossing islands, and even spotting Irrawaddy dolphins! It's true when you become friends with the locals, they will definitely welcome and treat you as their own family. And that really happened to me that even to this day, we still get in touch.

Cambodia is definitely an underrated country. If you are a budding missionary or has a heart for missions, I am highly recommending you come and serve here in Cambodia. The field is vast, and the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send you in the harvest field (Matthew 9:37-38)

Fast forward today

From a single missionary then and as a pastor’s wife now, I’ve had the incredible privilege of traveling and serving alongside my husband. My husband is from Cambodia (Khmer Pastor), so it's no brainer that this country has captured my heart 😁😍😅 All I can say is - this beautiful Southeast Asian nation is not only a stunning travel destination but also a place ripe for ministry opportunities. Let’s explore why Cambodia should be your mission destination 😍😅💪 I am just so excited to promote this country for mission work!

Cambodia: A Tapestry of Beauty and Warmth

Cambodia is a country of contrasts, where ancient temples stand tall amidst lush greenery. Khmers are renowned for their kindness and hospitality, making it an ideal place to connect with locals and share the love of Christ.

This country has long, and a lot of holidays all year round. Here are some of the top 10 provinces we have visited, ministered, and explored as a family each offering unique experiences for travelers and missionaries:

1. Siem Reap: The Crown Jewel

This province is the home to the iconic Angkor Wat, Siem Reap is a must-visit for history and adventure seekers. Explore these UNESCO temples, marvel at the intricate carvings, and witness breathtaking sunrises.

We do have a lot of ministry friends in this province (Vandy's friends and students). And almost all of them have their local churches. Whenever we have visitors, we definitely bring them here. It's good to experience the countryside and explore the mission field. Siem Reap, offers numerous opportunities for community outreach, education, and child sponsorship. Engage with local communities and share the hope of the Gospel.

2. Phnom Penh: The Vibrant Capital

We moved to the city and taught in the Bible school. We have been living in Phnom Penh since 2009. God has been faithful to us 👉 Young couple's ministry Journey

Here in the capital city, you may immerse yourself in Khmer culture with visits to the Royal Palace, National Museum, and bustling local markets. Enjoy delicious street food, explore the city's vibrant nightlife, and take a boat trip on the Mekong River (riding a ferry boat at night is the best!) 👍☝

Phnom Penh presents a wide range of ministry possibilities, including urban missions (bringing the gospel to the Marketplace), church planting, and supporting vulnerable populations. Our local church called PPC (Phnom Penh Church) has been involved and serving to the university students. We help and minister to them by strategically providing them safer dormitories as they study and work.

Teaching opportunities could also be a wonderful entry point for you to serve in Cambodia. Phnom Penh has a wide offering. Like my son's school 👌 Asian Hope International School It is a bilingual school for Cambodian children, teaching English and Khmer, promotes cultural appreciation and global leadership, incorporating a Christian worldview in an open, no-pressure environment.

3. Battambang: The Cultural Haven

Discover Cambodia's rural charm in Battambang. Explore the picturesque countryside by bicycle, visit the Killing Caves for a sobering reflection on the country's history, and indulge in traditional Khmer cuisine.

Battambang offers opportunities for agricultural projects, rural development, and building relationships with local communities.

4. Kep: The Coastal Paradise

It is only two-hour drive from Phnom Penh. Relax and unwind on the pristine beaches of Kep, known for its fresh seafood and laid-back atmosphere. Enjoy water sports, explore the nearby Kep National Park, and indulge in a rejuvenating spa treatment.

Kep provides a unique setting for beach missions, focusing on environmental conservation, fishing communities, and holistic care.

5. Kampot: The Bohemian Retreat

We love Kampot! It's only 30 minutes away Kep province. Most of our short family trips are experienced here. Yummy durians come from this province.

Experience the bohemian vibe of Kampot with its charming colonial architecture, pepper plantations, and scenic river cruises. Explore the nearby Bokor Hill Station for stunning mountain views.

For ministry, Kampot offers opportunities for youth ministry, arts-based outreach, and supporting local businesses.

6. Kampong Cham: Vandy's Hometown

Of course, I am biased 😅😍 we always come here to visit my in-laws and relatives. We always look forward to long holidays, my son David would always say "Road trip to visit Kongkong and Mayey are the best!" (grandpa & grandma).

Embark on an adventure to Nokor Bachey Temple, perched atop of a pagoda with breathtaking views. Hike through the surrounding, explore ancient ruins, and immerse yourself in nature. Enjoy sipping freshly squeezed sugar cane juice while looking at the Kizuna Bridge and/or the Bamboo Bridge along the riverside.

This province provides a challenging yet rewarding environment for ministry, focusing on rural development, tourism, education, and healthcare.

7. Kratie: The Mekong River Oasis

Our beloved hometown. This is also where Vandy and I met in the mission field.

Discover the slow pace of life in Kratie, a charming riverside town. Encounter the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, explore the Mekong islands, and experience authentic Cambodian village life and food!

Kratie offers opportunities for river-based missions, focusing on fishing communities, environmental conservation, teaching English, and community development.

8. Ratanakiri: The Untamed Wilderness

Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Ratanakiri, home to waterfalls, caves, and diverse wildlife. Explore the indigenous culture, trek through lush rainforests, and relax in hot springs.

We have a few ladies from our Dormitory who came from a tribe in this province. Ratanakiri presents unique challenges and opportunities for ministry, focusing on tribal communities, healthcare, and education.

9. Mondulkiri: The Highland Escape

Escape the heat and explore the cool highlands of Mondulkiri. Encounter elephants in their natural habitat, visit indigenous villages, and enjoy stunning mountain scenery.

Mondulkiri offers opportunities for wildlife conservation, community development, and working with ethnic minority groups.

10. Sihanoukville: The Beach Haven

Relax on the beautiful beaches of Sihanoukville, enjoy water sports, and explore the nearby islands. Experience the vibrant nightlife and indulge in fresh seafood.

Sihanoukville provides opportunities for beach missions, youth ministry, and working with the tourism industry.
