When Disappointments Teach Us (Part 2)
πfrom Part 1
In our family, we believe it is. Disappointment is not something we hide from our son David. We actually see it as a way to grow.
Recently, David tried to start a small chocolate crinkle cookie business. He was so excited, thinking people would buy it all day long. But things didn’t go as planned. Sales were poor, and he felt crushed. He even thought about giving up.
One evening, he showed me a diagram he had made—his own little business analysis. He had written down what went wrong and what could be improved: people didn’t see the crinkles, the banner only showed spaghetti, and sales only happened at lunch and dinner. He even listed ideas for making it better.
I was amazed. What looked like failure turned out to be a lesson. That night, we prayed as a family. We reminded David that even big businesses fail but learn to stand up again. And more importantly, we reminded him that disappointments can lead us back to God.
Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
God’s Word doesn’t show us the whole future. It gives us just enough light to take the next step. When we face failure or discouragement, we don’t have to see the entire road ahead. We just need to trust God to guide us step by step.
Here are some valuable lessons we try to live out as a family whenever disappointment comes:
1. To run to God in prayer
When life feels dark, prayer becomes the first step toward the light. Just as a lamp lights the way, prayer helps us see God’s presence in the middle of confusion.
Reflection: Psalm 119:105 reminds us that God’s Word lights our path, and prayer keeps us walking in that light. When we pray, we are not running away from problems but running toward God’s presence, where peace and direction are found.
Prayer:
Lord, teach me to run to You in prayer when my heart feels heavy. Remind me that I am never alone and that Your Word will always guide my steps. Amen.
2. To ask for forgiveness when they fail
Failure can make us feel guilty, ashamed, or defensive. But it can also humble us and remind us of our need for God’s mercy. Asking for forgiveness—whether from God or from others—is a step of faith that keeps our hearts tender.
Reflection: God’s Word lights up the places in our hearts that need correction. Just as a lamp reveals what is hidden in the dark, His truth reveals where we fall short and where we need grace.
Prayer:
Father, when I fail, give me the courage to admit it and the humility to ask for forgiveness. Thank You for always welcoming me back with Your love. Amen.
3. To trust God’s grace when things are hard
Life is filled with setbacks. Disappointments are part of the journey, but they don’t have to define us. Trusting God’s grace means believing that He can take our failures and turn them into lessons that prepare us for the future.
Reflection: The light of God’s Word is steady, even when our emotions feel unstable. It doesn’t flicker or fade. It reminds us that His grace is enough for every moment, no matter how dark.
Prayer:
Gracious God, help me trust Your grace when I feel weak. Remind me that Your strength is made perfect in my weakness. Keep me walking in the light of Your Word. Amen.
4. To reconcile when relationships are strained
Disappointments often affect our relationships—with family, friends, or coworkers. But God’s Word calls us to forgiveness, patience, and reconciliation. Just as His Word lights our path, it also lights the way back to peace with others.
Reflection: Walking in God’s light means choosing reconciliation over bitterness. It means allowing His truth to guide us in rebuilding trust and restoring love.
Prayer:
Lord, give me the heart to reconcile when relationships are strained. Let Your Word guide my steps toward peace, and teach me to forgive as You have forgiven me. Amen.
Closing Encouragement
David’s crinkle cookie business didn’t succeed as he hoped. But the lessons he gained and the faith we shared as a family were worth far more than sales.
Friend, whatever disappointment you are facing today, remember that God’s Word is your guiding lamp. It may not show you the whole future, but it will give you just enough light for your next step.
And even when your plans crumble, His love remains steady.
