How Do We Trust God’s Promises in the Mission Field?
Faith and Joy in the Mission Field
There’s something uniquely beautiful about stepping into the unknown, trusting God’s promises, and watching Him work in ways we could never imagine. As a pastor’s wife, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside my husband, Vandy, in ministry—from the remote mission fields of Kratie province to the bustling city of Phnom Penh. Through it all, one truth has remained constant: God is faithful, and His promises never fail.
“The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”
This verse has been our anchor in ministry, especially during seasons of uncertainty, limited resources, and overwhelming challenges. Whether you’re feeling called to missions, discipling young people, or simply sharing the gospel in your neighborhood, I want to remind you that God’s provision is as sure as His calling.
Our Journey: From Kratie to Phnom Penh
When Vandy and I first met, he was serving as a church planter in Kratie, a far-flung province in Cambodia. Fresh out of Bible school, he started with English classes—a simple yet effective way to build trust and relationships in the community. Parents and students began to open their hearts, and soon, a small church was born.

When I joined him in the mission field, we witnessed firsthand the physical and spiritual needs of the people we served. The fields were vast, and the laborers were few. But God was at work, and He provided everything we needed—whether it was wisdom, strength, or even fellow workers to join us.
Later, God called us to Phnom Penh, where Vandy served as a Bible school teacher. It was there that we felt led to start a house church in our neighborhood—The Way To Life Church Phnom Penh. We met young people, couples, and families, each with their own struggles and stories. Many felt unloved, unseen, and searching for hope. Through it all, we saw God’s hand at work, transforming lives and drawing people to Himself.

Ministry is not without its challenges. There were times when finances were tight, resources were scarce, and the work felt overwhelming. We moved from one apartment to another, never having a permanent home. But Vandy would always remind me, “Our permanent home is in heaven. We’re just passing through this earth.” Even our son, David, grew up understanding that our ultimate destination is eternity with Christ.
Despite the challenges, there was always joy—joy in seeing lives transformed, joy in witnessing God’s provision, and joy in knowing we were exactly where God wanted us to be.
5 Reflections for Those Feeling Called to Missions
If you’re feeling called to missions or ministry but are hesitating because of doubts or concerns, here are five reflections to encourage you:
God’s Calling Comes with His Provision
When God calls you, He equips you. Isaiah 58:11 reminds us that He will satisfy our needs, even in the most challenging circumstances. Trust that He will provide the resources, strength, and wisdom you need.
Start Where You Are
You don’t have to move to a remote village to make an impact. Begin in your neighborhood, workplace, or community. Look for opportunities to share the gospel and disciple those around you.Embrace the Challenges as Part of the Journey
Challenges are not a sign that you’re off track—they’re often a sign that you’re right where God wants you. Trust that He will use every difficulty to strengthen your faith and refine your character.Focus on Relationships, Not Results
Ministry is about people, not numbers. Build genuine relationships, listen to their stories, and love them as Christ loves you. The gospel is best shared through lives that reflect His love.Remember the Eternal Impact
The work you do for God’s kingdom has eternal significance. Even when it feels small or unnoticed, you’re planting seeds that God will grow in His perfect timing.
A Call to Action: Step Out in Faith
If you’ve been feeling a nudge toward missions or ministry, I want to encourage you to take that step of faith. Start by praying for God’s guidance and seeking opportunities to serve in your community. Remember, you don’t have to have it all figured out—you just need to be willing.
Here's my other post on my own mission journey to Cambodia 👉"Mission Calling"As you step out, hold onto the promise of Isaiah 58:11. God will guide you, provide for you, and strengthen you. There is immeasurable joy in serving the Lord, even when it’s hard.
A Prayer for Your Journey
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to be part of Your work. Give us the courage to step out in faith, trusting that You will provide all we need. Strengthen us in the challenges and fill us with joy as we serve You. Help us to be a light in our communities, sharing Your love and truth with those around us. May our lives reflect Your grace and bring glory to Your name.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Final Encouragement
Friends, the mission field is wherever God has placed you. Whether it’s in a remote village, a bustling city, or your own neighborhood, your obedience to His call matters. Trust His promises, embrace the journey, and remember that there is always joy in serving the Lord.
If you’re ready to take the next step, start by praying and seeking God’s direction. And if you’d like to dive deeper into what it means to trust God in ministry, I invite you to explore the resources and stories we’ve shared.
Together, let’s be witnesses of God’s love and grace, bringing hope to a world in need.
