Faith in an Ever-Changing Cambodia

Hebrews 13:8

If there’s one promise verse that’s easy to memorize and powerful to claim every day, it’s this:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8

Wow, just wow! What a truth to hold on to!

No matter what season of life we are in, this verse remains relevant. It reminds us that while everything around us changes—our circumstances, relationships, even our emotions—Jesus remains constant. He was faithful before, He is faithful now, and He will be faithful forever.

I often find myself coming back to this verse when I feel discouraged or uncertain. When life feels overwhelming, I remind myself: My Jesus never changes. He has always been good, ever-present in times of need, the lover of my soul, and my Waymaker.

Just thinking about Him fills my heart with gratitude. I could go on and on about His goodness! 🥰

I encourage you to claim this verse for yourself. Memorize it, reflect on it, and speak it over your life daily. It’s a promise that brings peace to the restless heart and hope to the weary soul.

Faith in an Ever-Changing Cambodia

Cambodia is a nation rich in history, culture, and tradition. With 93% of the population practicing Buddhism, Christianity is still a minority faith. Although the gospel has been shared here for decades, there is still much work to be done.

Yet, we remain hopeful. We trust that in God’s perfect timing, more Cambodians will come to know Jesus. It’s our prayer that we don’t lose heart in sharing His goodness—through our words, our actions, and the way we live our lives.

I see this need for perseverance in my everyday life here. At my university, I work alongside lecturers from various religious backgrounds—Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and even some Khmer Muslims. In major malls like Aeon Mall, prayer rooms have been set up to accommodate the growing Muslim community. Even in my husband Vandy’s hometown in Kampong Cham, there’s a large Muslim community living alongside Buddhist neighbors.

These encounters remind me that people are deeply committed to their faith. They pray regularly, fast during Ramadan, and uphold their religious traditions with sincerity. It challenges me to ask: Am I just as devoted in my faith? Do I truly believe that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever? Do I live out that belief?

Hebrews 13:8
Five Reflections on Hebrews 13:8

1. Jesus is Our Constant in Life’s Uncertainties

Life in Cambodia, like anywhere else, comes with its uncertainties. Political shifts, economic struggles, and natural disasters can create a sense of instability. Families face hardships—financial burdens, sickness, and even the loss of loved ones. But Hebrews 13:8 reassures us: Jesus never changes.

When I first arrived in Cambodia as a missionary in 2007, everything felt unfamiliar. I had left behind the comforts of home, and at times, I struggled with loneliness and doubt. But looking back, I see how God remained constant. He provided, guided, and sustained me—just as He does today.

If you’re facing uncertainty, take heart. The same Jesus who walked with you yesterday will walk with you today and all your tomorrows.

2. Jesus is Our Unchanging Source of Grace

No matter how many times we fall short, Jesus’ grace remains. We all have sinned and are unworthy to be called God’s children. But because of His great love, He made a way for us to be reconciled with Him.

When I reflect on my journey, I see countless moments when I’ve failed—times when I lacked patience, struggled with faith, or doubted His plans. Yet, Jesus never turned away. His grace covered me then, and it still covers me now.

If you feel unworthy or distant from God, remember: Jesus is the bridge that connects us to the Father. His love never wavers.

3. Jesus is the Same in Every Culture and Generation

It’s amazing to see how the gospel transcends cultures. Whether in Cambodia, the Philippines, or anywhere else, the message of Jesus remains unchanged. His love speaks to every heart, no matter the background.

I think of the Matigsalug tribe in the mountains of the Philippines, where I once did mission work. Their traditional beliefs center on animism, the idea that spirits exist in all things. And yet, when they heard about Jesus, something resonated. The truth of the gospel spoke to them just as powerfully as it speaks to people in Cambodia, in America, or anywhere else in the world.

The same Jesus who walked the earth 2,000 years ago is still changing lives today. His message never loses its power.

4. Jesus is Our Strength in Sharing the Gospel

Sharing our faith in a country where Christianity is a minority can be challenging. There are moments when it feels discouraging—when people seem uninterested or resistant to the message of Christ. But we are not alone in this mission.

One of my greatest inspirations is Rhonwyn Kendrick, a praying mother and grandmother who has seen the power of prayer firsthand. She reminds us that even when we don’t see immediate results, God is always at work. Every seed we plant—whether through a conversation, an act of kindness, or a simple prayer—can grow into something greater than we can imagine.

If you ever feel discouraged in sharing your faith, remember: Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is the one who transforms hearts. Keep praying, keep loving, and keep trusting.

5. Jesus is the Foundation of Our Hope

When everything around us changes, where do we place our hope? Hebrews 13:8 reminds us that our faith is not built on shifting sands, but on the solid rock of Christ.

I’ve seen many people place their hope in wealth, career success, or even relationships—only to be disappointed. But Jesus? He never fails.

The world will change. People will change. But Jesus remains. And that is why we can have hope, no matter what comes our way.

A Prayer of Trust in Jesus’ Unchanging Nature

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for being the same yesterday, today, and forever. In a world full of change, You are my constant. When I face uncertainties, help me to trust in Your unwavering love. When I struggle with faith, remind me of Your unchanging grace. When I share Your gospel, give me strength and patience.

Lord, I pray for Cambodia and the people who have yet to know You. May Your light shine in their hearts. May I be a faithful witness of Your love and truth. And when I feel weary, may I always return to the promise of Hebrews 13:8.

Jesus, You are my rock, my refuge, and my hope. I choose to trust in You today and every day. Amen.

Hebrews 13:8
Be encouraged, and keep your eyes on Jesus!

I encourage you to take this verse to heart. Memorize it. Speak it over your life. Hold on to it when challenges come. No matter what happens, you can rest in the truth that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Let’s continue to love others, share the gospel, and remain faithful in our calling. Cambodia may be a land of many faiths, but we serve a God who never changes. And that gives us hope for today, tomorrow, and eternity.

Serving in Cambodia!
